Ricky Gervais Crosses Line at Golden Globes

One of freethinking’s favorite heathen comedians stepped on toes aplenty after hosting the 68th annual Golden Globe Awards. Ricky Gervais, creator of The Office UK version, left a wake of satirical victims from his hosting chores and now everyone is talking hurt feelings, big laughs and a possible career boost for the offender. What did he do exactly?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, his list of offenses include slamming Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp for The Tourist, calling Bruce Willis “Ashton Kutcher’s Dad,” and making suggestions that some well known Scientologists were gay. In addition, Gervais made fun of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (who runs The Golden Globes) for taking bribes to win awards and introducing the president of the HFPA  with something to the extent of helping him off the toilet and popping his teeth in.

Needless to say, Gervais realized he wouldn’t be invited back and said it was the last time he would host the Golden Globes. That’s the problem with being a comedian. Either you go too far and offend everyone or you don’t go far enough and bore everyone. If this incident does boost Gervais’ career I hope he does decide to choose some better projects. My wife is a huge fan, as she listens to his podcast, but surprisingly, as someone who makes fun of superstitious nonsense, one of his film projects was 2008’s Ghost Town. Not that he can’t do fictional work about ghosts, but it just seemed a strange choice for his comedy stylings.

In a side story, also on Hollywood Reporter, conservatives are applauding Ricky Gervais’ performance because they enjoyed seeing the Hollywood crowd get hammered for once. Apparently one conservative writer elevated Gervais to a hero for middle class America because he was sick of Hollywood elites making fun of Jesus, Dubya, and Sarah Palin. I hope American conservatives invite Gervais to host one of their outings…which will end the hero status. Have you seen Gervais talk about Christianity? Search for him on YouTube. It would do middle America well to check it out.
