  1. Bertand has a point. The idea that Jesus is for America first (God bless US is what that is essentially saying), sounds more than a bit like tribalism. Jesus actually was very much opposed to tribalism. Jesus said he was not there to bring peace, but a sword (Mathew 10:34). At first, this might seem to endorse tribalism, but it does not. He said:

    Luke 12:51
Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division: For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three. The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.

This sounds extreme, but Jesus was trying to hammer the point that one’s own family would be divided when it came to following Him. He wasn’t “pro-family” in the tribalistic sense. He taught that one must even forsake one’s own family (and by extension one’s own tribe or nation) in order to become one of His followers.
