I've always known that there are more reasons than just God that people to go to church. The dirty secret is dating. Watch "good girl" comedienne Kerri Pomarolli tell you how it works.
This video is of stand-up by Christian Comedienne Kerri Pomarolli and I think it's funny because in order for it to be funny there has to be a ring of truth. All of the Christians laughing in the audience seem to relate to what she is talking about and as an ex-Christian I know this also to be true--part of going to church, maybe all of going to church, as a single person is about pew dating. Finding that mate you think God is going to magically sit down next to you. If God is in charge of dating and marriage you would think it would work like EHarmony.com but as usual if God is involved it's an organizational mess.
I'm going to try to find more videos like this because Christians, and definitely talented ones like this girl who I give kudos to, reveal the true nature of church--it's a community center. Religion in general has many more purposes than worshipping. Freethinkers are in the process of developing their own community centers--many do exist--but there is a lot of work to be done. I would say mainly it is a matter of time and money, which we overall lack because who's going to pay someone to be an atheist or agnostic running something as opposed to all of the positions available to be paid as a Christian. The situation is progressing but if you have ideas then take the plunge and figure out how you can finance a freethinking community center. This is competition and this is part of the freethought market that I'm always talking about. If a Church offers free movie night showing The Passion that's marketing for their message. If atheists can offer free movie night and show Heart of The Beholder than at least we're competing.
