It was prophecised

Law and Order SVU and Law and Order Criminal Intent are admittedly two of my favorite crime shows. Mainly because they usually stick to the crime instead of going off into sappy subplots about people's love lives. As well as many times they don't wrap up the ending very neatly, much like real life.

So I got to wondering what Christians would think of a fourteen-year-old girl being impregnated by a stranger, a stranger she said was the Holy Spirit. Now-a-days we would call that statutory rape, or even just rape, but if it's in the Bible it's a beautiful miracle.

Many of our modern horror movies use themes of being impregnated by unknown beings. It's one of our nightmares, the idea of something that lives inside your stomach and has to eventually exit. Imagine if you found yourself pregnant and everyone said God did it. As a fourteen-year-old girl I would think that would scare the hell out of me. Why does God need to enter the world through a virgin? If virgins are so pure then it's no wonder Christians never embraced sex until they had to catch up to the secular world.

Virginity implies purity, sex implies something spoiled or damaged--why? Because in the past women were considered property. The only difference now is that Christian men and women have become more sensitive in America and consider themselves to be each other's property instead of just the man owning the woman. There's nothing impure about losing your virginity as long as your responsible and take precautionary steps to avoid an unwanted pregnancy.

Mary was God's property. She had no say in if she wanted to be pregnant or not. Maybe she wanted it that way, maybe she felt violated (remember it was the men who wrote the Bible). Maybe she got knocked up by her cousin and had to make up a story to avoid being stoned. It would make a great Law and Order episode.
